The Southwest Key GO Program:
Creating Pathways for Tomorrow’s Legacy
What is the Southwest Key GO Program?
The Southwest Key GO Program is a college completion program dedicated to serving the graduates of East Austin College Prep (EAPrep). The GO Program supports all pathways of higher education, including: certificate and technical programs as well as 2- and 4-year institutions. We specialize in providing support to first-generation and low-income students. Our focus is to ensure all students have academic, financial and socio-emotional support throughout their college experience. This program was designed to serve as a support system and propel students forward so they thrive in today’s job market.
Who benefits from the GO Program?
The GO Program currently serves all graduates of East Austin College Prep (EAPrep). The majority of EAPrep students are often the first in their families to graduate from high school and enroll in college, so personalized support is crucial to help eliminate barriers. We have designed the program with families in mind and extend our services to parents of EAPrep alumnus as well.
What services do we provide?
The GO Program is an extension of EAPrep and works directly with students by providing transitional support during their senior year as well as the following support throughout college:
- Individualized Advising: Every student is assigned an academic case manager who meets with them bi-weekly throughout their college experience to provide academic coaching and advising
- Financial Aid Management: Students receive support completing financial aid applications, including FAFSA & TASFA
- Transfer Support: Students who begin at a 2-year college with plans to transfer to a 4-year institution are supported through the transfer process
- Leadership Experiences: We keep students connected to their community by providing opportunities for personal and professional growth
- Resource connection: Academic case managers work closely with students by connecting them to services on campus and in the community that will help them succeed
What sets us apart?
Our hands on approach is supported by research, student feedback, and our vision to transform East Austin into a college educated community. Every student who participates in the GO Program receives a scholarship for their enrollment at an institute of higher education. Southwest Key has awarded EAPrep graduates over $200,000 in scholarship funds over the last three years and will continue to make funds available for students who actively participate in the program and are enrolled in an institution of higher learning. Services grow with the student need. The program evolves with student need and meets students and families where they are to level the playing field.
What are the goals of the program?
The core goal is college completion and to ensure every student earns a post-secondary degree or credential. The goals of the GO Program align directly with the values of Southwest Key, specifically the value around familia, including parents as part of the college experience. Aside from this, the GO Program creates a community of support for students by partnering with college campus staff and key stakeholders. By partnering with parents, college campus staff and like-minded organizations we are able to create a strong support system for our students so they persist through college, reach their full potential and be drivers of change in their community.
In 2017, Southwest Key became a formal partner of the Austin College Access Network (ACAN), which is a coalition of community-based organizations, local higher education institutions, school districts, and other organizations committed to promoting college-going and completion cultures. Members are committed to helping first-generation and traditionally underrepresented students successfully complete high school, enroll in higher education and earn a credential. This coalition is facilitated by E3 Alliance as one of its collective impact initiatives for educational alignment in Texas.
