Dr. Juan Sanchez is the founding board chair of East Austin College Prep.
Dr. Sanchez grew up in one of the poorest barrios in a South Texas border town where life was full of challenges. As a young man, he first found refuge in boxing where the physical and emotional demand of conditioning focused his energies and time. In addition, a number of caring, supportive adults encouraged him to expect more from life and to pursue an education.
Dr. Sanchez enrolled in St. Mary's College in San Antonio to pursue a Bachelor's degree. After graduation, he went on to obtain a Master's degree in Seattle and ultimately Cambridge, Massachusetts where he was among the first Latinos to receive his doctorate from the School of Education at Harvard University.
Dr. Sanchez achieved more than he ever could have imagined as a young man living in Brownsville, and once he had the opportunity, he returned to the barrio to give back to his community and to encourage others to expect more from life.
Living in the barrio once again, Dr. Sanchez learned that the young people of his community needed to recognize the power of an education. He then dedicated his life to helping young men and women - particularly those who are poor and of color - by providing life changing opportunities to prepare them for success in their lives. In 1987 he founded Southwest Key Programs.
Today, Southwest Key Programs is the 4th largest Hispanic-led nonprofit organization in the country operating 55 programs nationwide. Because of Southwest Key's work, thousands of youth have been diverted from prisons, jails, institutions - able to stay at home with their families and out of trouble. Southwest Key's alternative schools have prevent hundreds of youth from dropping out of school and provided them with individualized education in a therapeutic setting. Southwest Key has reunified thousands of immigrant children with their families and provided these unaccompanied minors with 24-hour care, education, medical and clinical services in ten shelter along the Southern US border.
Dr. Sanchez is proud to have built one of the most diverse nonprofits in the country, where 93 percent of Southwest Key's 1000 employees, including most top managers and board members, are people of color. In the summer of 2008, Southwest Key was nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation, one of the world's leading human service accreditation organizations.
To make a large-scale impact on the lives of those he serves, Dr. Sanchez believes we must invest in the communities where they live, learn, and play. On Southwest Key's 20th anniversary, he tested this new theory of change with the grand opening of El Centro de Familia, launching the East Austin Children's Promise with large-scale job creation, community empowerment, and education initiatives. Dr. Sanchez opened East Austin College Prep at El Centro de Familia in 2008, the first Full Service Community School in Austin.
Today, Dr. Sanchez is a nationally recognized leader in the field of youth programming. He serves on the boards of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and is an advisor to the Vera Institute of Justice and the Annie E. Casey Foundation's Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative. He has received many awards throughout his career, most recently the Ohtli Award from the Mexican Consulate, the Freddy Fender Humanitarian Award, the Rising to the Challenge Social Justice Award from LULAC, and the Leading Voices Award from American Gateways for his work on behalf of immigrant children.

El Dr. Juan Sánchez se crío en uno de los barrios más pobres de Brownsville, un pueblo en el sur de Texas donde la vida era difícil. De adolescente, encontró un escape en el boxeo, y dedicó una gran parte de su tiempo y energía a entrenar para ese deporte. En esos años, también contó con el apoyo de varios adultos que lo animaron a creer en sí mismo e ir a la universidad.
