A Volunteer Youth Mentor Gives Back To The Community

“When I was 15, I felt like my life was over because I was pregnant. I didn’t know if I would be able to graduate or go to college,” says Southwest Key Program Assistant Brenda Gonzalez. Thanks to a mentor in her life, Gonzalez is about to graduate from Austin Community College and now volunteers with Southwest Key Youth Mentoring Program, guiding youth with a similar background to her own.

SWKey Board Member Victor Garza Receives Award

On October 11, 2013, Southwest Key Board Member Victor Garza was one of the five honorees to be recognized at the First Annual Latino Heritage Leadership Award. Mr. Garza is the founder of La Raza Roundtable, Santa Clara County, California’s largest coalition of Latino and Mexican-American organizations.

Internationally renowned environmental activist and co-founder of PODER (People Organized in Defense of the Earth and her Resources) Susana Almanza was inducted into the Southwest Key Walk of Heroes Saturday at the national nonprofit’s East Austin headquarters, el Centro de Familia.

Fore the Kids Golf Classic

Southwest Key Programs’ 9th Annual “Fore the Kids Golf Classic” tournament and raffle is coming up on October 11th at Star Ranch Golf Club. It will be a fun day of golfing with dinner, drinks, and an awards program to follow. This year’s tournament benefits East Austin College Prep’s Globaloria program as part of the commitment to prepare students for college and career opportunities of the 21st century.

Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Raises Over $10,000 For East Austin Children’s Promise

On September 10, 2013, Dr. Juan Sanchez, CEO of Southwest Key Programs and Dr. Joe Gonzales, Superintendent of East Austin College Prep, received a check for over $10,000 for East Austin Children’s Promise raised through the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf’s Caring Cup Wristband Initiative.

EAPrep Students Walk in the Footsteps of Our Nation’s Leaders

In May of 2013, East Austin College Prep History Teacher, Jacqueline Vidal, lead a group of students to Washington D.C. as part of the Close Up Program. The Close Up Foundation, a non-profit, nonpartisan educational organization, founded in 1971, organized the trip. They offer students of varying grades an in-depth view of the democratic process through interactive participation.

Family Keys Team Presents At The TNOYS Conference in San Antonio, TX

The Austin and San Antonio Family Keys Program did a fabulous job presenting at the 30th Annual Texas Network of Youth Services (TNOYS) Conference in San Antonio on August 16, 2013. TNOYS is a non-profit network that provides advocacy work while promoting opportunities for young people. The Family Keys team consisted of 4 staff and 3 clients who educated participants on, “Lessons from the Field: Engaging youth and families.”

LULAC & Ford Driving Dreams Through Education

As school-age children prepare for school, hundreds of students from East Austin College Prep (EAPrep) will get an extra push this fall through a music-based high school dropout prevention program, Austin Soundwaves. Working with East Austin College Prep, LULAC Council 4933 will help East Austin students to remain engaged in school through an innovative music program with the Hispanic Alliance for the Performance Arts known as Austin Soundwaves.

In the Hispanic Culture, Food is Our Bond

Sonia Gallegos’ earliest memory of food is of her grandmother selling groceries out of a small chest in Mexico. Gallegos’ mother also made a career in the food industry when she arrived in the United States. Inspired by her mother and grandmother, who spent their lives around food and a kitchen, Gallegos began working in a restaurant, and now possesses over 30 years of experience in the industry.

Southwest Key Community Connections Helping Youths in Buffalo, NY

Fifteen-year-old De-Janay of Buffalo, New York has been suspended several times for disruptive and truant behavior. She has been described as aggressive, disrespectful and violent in school. In February of this year, Family Services Team referred De-Janay to Southwest Key Community Connections, a juvenile justice program aimed at preventing at-risk youth, ages 11 to 17, from further entering the justice system.

Meet Health Promise Coach Sheldon Williams

When Superintendent Dr. Joe Gonzales was looking for people to help round out the health and wellness curriculum at East Austin College Prep, Sheldon Williams was an obvious choice. A resident of East Austin, Williams grew up just down the street from EAPrep partner Southwest Key Programs on Jain Lane. Williams wanted to be “the best basketball player in the world” as a kid and, since he was skinny, began working out at an early age. He notes, “Working out didn’t hurt with the girls either.”

Wednesday, December 5, 2012 — Workforce Solutions Cameron was recognized at the 16th Annual Texas Workforce Commission Conference in Grapevine, Texas as one of the top 3 performing Workforce Boards for the year. The awards, which recognize Workforce Investment Act exemplary performance, are based on a board’s accomplishments in the areas of adult, dislocated worker, and youth, and also consider board expenditures.
