Social Enterprises: A Beacon in Tough Times

The social enterprise landscape is booming, despite economic indicators that should suggest otherwise. Organizations that exist to assist people without any regard for their own bottom line become more necessary in difficult economic times. Yet the same double-edged sword that makes them necessary also makes it difficult for them to provide assistance. Grants disappear. Donations stop rolling in. These enterprises need to get creative to succeed in their mission. As you will see, that is exactly what the organizations on our Top 25 Hispanic Nonprofits list are doing.

Southwest Key, No. 4 on the HispanicBusiness Top 25 Nonprofits list with $120.9 million in expenditures in 2013, is an organization dedicated to “improving the quality of life for children by providing culturally relevant schools, shelters for immigrant children, and youth and family services.” Founded in Austin, Texas, in 1987 by Dr. Juan Sanchez, Southwest Key has expanded to six states, providing services for nearly 226,000 clients in 2013.

ACE After School Program Captures the Spirit of Dr. Seuss During Spring Break

ACE After School program at East Austin College Prep hosted a Dr. Seuss Birthday camp the week of Spring Break, March 10-14, 2014. The Seuss theme was a continuation of a week full of various cross-curriculum Seuss activities held at the school the previous week. ACE worked closely with EAPrep Literary Specialist Meg Fiengo to plan the camp. “It was a celebration of imagination and curiosity,” says Tanya Gonzalez, Program Administrator for ACE.

Austin Mom Layla Fry Fundraises For Children In Memory Of Her Son

East Austin College Prep raised over $8,000 during the 2nd annual Amplify Austin event, a 24-hour, web-based, festival of giving that took place March 20-21st, 2014. Southwest Key Communications and Web Manager Layla Fry raised over $3,000 of that amount on her personal Amplify page by sharing her personal story of loss this year.

Southwest Key Community Connections Helping Youths in Buffalo, NY

Fifteen-year-old De-Janay of Buffalo, New York has been suspended several times for disruptive and truant behavior. She has been described as aggressive, disrespectful and violent in school. In February of this year, Family Services Team referred De-Janay to Southwest Key Community Connections, a juvenile justice program aimed at preventing at-risk youth, ages 11 to 17, from further entering the justice system.

“This neighborhood has changed quite a bit since the early 70s. It’s not as closely knit as it used to be. I used to know everyone and now people just keep to themselves,” says retired firefighter Steven Lewis who grew up in the east Austin neighborhood of Govalle-Johnston Terrace where Southwest Key is headquartered.

On January 15, 2014, East Austin College Prep’s MLK Campus had their beginning of semester student-wide assembly. It’s a new semester for East Austin College Prep and the students started the semester with good news on their STAAR Testing Results. Dr. Joe Gonzales welcomed the tigers back from their winter break and made several big announcements and changes at EAPrep.

Surrounded by bicycle parts in a small warehouse off Webberville Rd. in east Austin, Miguel F. is fixing up an old cruiser bike with his mentor Gabriel Cruz-Letelier at The Yellow Bike Project. “This is something he has on his goal list to accomplish and I want to make sure that I work on that with him,” says Cruz-Letelier.
