This summer, East Austin College Prep’s Globaloria Program for video game design hopes to take 17 EAPrep students to New York City to to explore the tech industry.

“It’s going to be a good experience and opportunity because they are giving me a chance to explore new things,” says EAPrep student, Lucerito G.

Games for Change was founded in 2004 with the mission of catalyzing social impact through digital games. The Games for Change Festival is the largest gaming event in New York City and the leading international event uniting game designers with those interested in accessing the positive social impact of games.

The trip will give the students a chance to network with working professionals and peers. In addition to presenting at Games for Change, they will be visiting leading universities, educational institutions and technology corporations to learn more about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) careers. Most of the students attending the trip will be the first in their family to attend college and they are looking forward to exploring different universities.

East Austin College Prep, every student in 6th grade and up learns to write computer games.

Nyssa Arcos the Academic Technology Specialist at EAPrep will be leading the trip to New York City. The group plans on visiting Google, ABC Studios, Nickelodeon, World Wide Workshop, Columbia University, New York University, Julliard School, Pratt Institute, Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria, Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Museum of Natural History, National Museum of Mathematics and the Sony Wonder Technology Lab.

At East Austin College Prep, every student in 6th grade and up learns to write computer games. Learning to code can open up a world of opportunity, especially when a student comes from a community that has a historically low rate of educational attainment.

“My parents think this is a big opportunity because they never had the chance to travel, let alone go out of state. My parents are excited that I will be able to travel out of state and explore and learn new things,” says Miranda G.
