SWK Closed for MLK Day

Monday, January 16, 2012
Description: This Monday, January 16, 2012 we will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In observance of the federal holiday, this Monday will be a holiday for Southwest Key Programs, Workforce, Enterprises, & EAPrep.

The world was introduced to Dr. King through his leadership with the nonviolent demonstration of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He later became known for his tireless efforts on behalf of civil rights for all people, especially African-Americans and the poor. Perhaps he is best known for his legendary “I Have a Dream” speech delivered in Washington, DC in front of over 250,000 peaceful marchers. We honor Dr. King because he embodies all the values we believe in at Southwest Key Programs.

The Corporation for National and Community Service has declared January 16, 2012 a national day of service. We hope you take the time to participate in a meaningful way to honor Dr. King this holiday. To find a project in your area or for more information on Dr. King, you can visit http://mlkday.gov/.

In addition, we will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in our next Walk of Heroes event on Saturday, February 25th from 10:00 am to 1:00pm. This event will feature a Learning Fair at El Centro de Familia followed by the unveiling of a mosaic of Dr. King, and include performances from various artists. Additional details will be sent in the future.

“Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness… We all have the drum major instinct.” Excerpt from The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Drum Major Instinct" sermon, given on February 4, 1968.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday.
