Former NFL player Vince Young met with twenty-five East Austin College Prep 5th and 6th graders Sunday at Vince Young Steakhouse to explain that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) can be used in everyday activities like cooking.

TWC Volunteers At Pumpkin Madness

Time Warner Cable staff showed EAPrep students the physics of rolling a pumpkin on an incline versus even ground. Students were able to learn about motion and gravity by launching small pumpkins in a plastic launcher.

Young African Leaders Volunteer at Southwest Key’s Mobile Food Pantry

It is 3:00pm on a sweltering Friday afternoon in July at Southwest Key Programs headquarters and 25 young entrepreneurs from 18 African countries are lined up at the monthly mobile food pantry to pass out food in east Austin. These volunteers are part of the Young African Leaders Initiative launched by President Barack Obama in 2010.

Ft. Hood Armed Forces Mentor Southwest Key JJAEP Clients

On Saturday, April 12, staff and students from Bell County JJAEP (Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program) volunteered and participated in a 5k run/walk for Human Trafficking Awareness as part as Global Youth Service Day 2014. Paul Anderson and his wife came in at 93rd and 95th place during the run.

Mother’s Day Spotlight: EAPrep Mother & Son Antonia and Michael Alvarez

East Austin College Prep sophomore Michael Alvarez gave his mother a card last year with a handwritten message that said, “I can make all the money in the world but the most important thing is to have you in my life. I’m going to study really hard so I can buy you a house.” Alvarez, an award-winning web game design student through EAPrep’s Globaloria program, credits his success to his mother’s support.

Ninth grader Scout Garza has been volunteering at Southwest Key’s Mobile Food Pantry with her mother Stefanie Montoya ever since her induction into the National Junior Honor Society in the 6th grade required her to perform community service. Her mother Stefanie has worked with Southwest Key’s benefits broker for years, so they immediately thought of Southwest Key when considering volunteer options.

ACE After School Program Captures the Spirit of Dr. Seuss During Spring Break

ACE After School program at East Austin College Prep hosted a Dr. Seuss Birthday camp the week of Spring Break, March 10-14, 2014. The Seuss theme was a continuation of a week full of various cross-curriculum Seuss activities held at the school the previous week. ACE worked closely with EAPrep Literary Specialist Meg Fiengo to plan the camp. “It was a celebration of imagination and curiosity,” says Tanya Gonzalez, Program Administrator for ACE.

Austin Mom Layla Fry Fundraises For Children In Memory Of Her Son

East Austin College Prep raised over $8,000 during the 2nd annual Amplify Austin event, a 24-hour, web-based, festival of giving that took place March 20-21st, 2014. Southwest Key Communications and Web Manager Layla Fry raised over $3,000 of that amount on her personal Amplify page by sharing her personal story of loss this year.
