About the East Austin College Prep Academy
Southwest Key Programs is proud to present the East Austin College Prep Academy, an innovative, tuition-free charter middle school open to all students living in East Austin. The Academy accepted its first class of 90 sixth graders in 2009, and will open its seventh and eighth grade campuses in 2010 and 2011. The new school is located at Southwest Key’s East Austin Community Development Center, a 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility constructed in 2008. This Academy is the realization of a long standing dream to have a community middle school located right in the heart of the Johnston Terrace neighborhood.
At the East Austin College Prep Academy, students will be empowered to set their expectations high and will leave prepared to succeed in high school and go on to college.
The Academy’s curriculum is based on the highly successful YES College Prep model in Houston, which was just ranked #52 among the top 100 schools in America, according to US News and World Report. The school provides a rigorous college preparatory curriculum with a strong foundation in math and science, while offering a balanced program that also nurtures the arts and community service.
Southwest Key Programs is the 4th largest Hispanic nonprofit in the country, nationally accredited and recognized for its culturally-competent educational programming. Founded in 1987 with a diverse workforce of over 1,000 employees, Southwest Key operates 55 programs in 7 states, including four highly successful alternative schools in Texas.
Addressing the needs of Texas’ diverse student population is a top priority for Southwest Key Programs. According to the U.S. Census, the number of Latino students in U.S. public schools almost doubled between 1990 and 2006, with Texas as one of four states where the Latino public school student population is more than 40 percent of all students. By using Southwest Key as a culturally relevant resource, the East Austin College Prep Academy is in a position to help the area’s high school students raise their test scores, receive valuable assistance in preparing students and their families for higher education, and improve employment opportunities.
