Ninth grader Scout Garza has been volunteering at Southwest Key’s Mobile Food Pantry with her mother Stefanie Montoya ever since her induction into the National Junior Honor Society in the 6th grade required her to perform community service. Her mother Stefanie has worked with Southwest Key’s benefits broker for years, so they immediately thought of Southwest Key when considering volunteer options.

ACE After School program at East Austin College Prep hosted a Dr. Seuss Birthday camp the week of Spring Break, March 10-14, 2014. The Seuss theme was a continuation of a week full of various cross-curriculum Seuss activities held at the school the previous week. ACE worked closely with EAPrep Literary Specialist Meg Fiengo to plan the camp. “It was a celebration of imagination and curiosity,” says Tanya Gonzalez, Program Administrator for ACE.

Austin Mom Layla Fry Fundraises For Children In Memory Of Her Son

East Austin College Prep raised over $8,000 during the 2nd annual Amplify Austin event, a 24-hour, web-based, festival of giving that took place March 20-21st, 2014. Southwest Key Communications and Web Manager Layla Fry raised over $3,000 of that amount on her personal Amplify page by sharing her personal story of loss this year.

It’s a new semester for East Austin College Prep and the students started the semester with good news on their STAAR Testing Results. This summer, East Austin College Prep’s teacher, Alfredo Garcia will be taking his theater class on a Europe excursion. Mr. Garcia came to East Austin College Prep in 2012 with over a decade of international teaching experience. In May of 2013, East Austin College Prep History Teacher, Jacqueline Vidal, lead a group of students to Washington D.C. as part of the Close Up Program. The Close Up Foundation, a non-profit, nonpartisan educational organization, founded in 1971, organized the trip. They offer students of varying grades an in-depth view of the democratic process through interactive participation.

As school-age children prepare for school, hundreds of students from East Austin College Prep (EAPrep) will get an extra push this fall through a music-based high school dropout prevention program, Austin Soundwaves. Working with East Austin College Prep, LULAC Council 4933 will help East Austin students to remain engaged in school through an innovative music program with the Hispanic Alliance for the Performance Arts known as Austin Soundwaves.

Sonia Gallegos’ earliest memory of food is of her grandmother selling groceries out of a small chest in Mexico. Gallegos’ mother also made a career in the food industry when she arrived in the United States. Inspired by her mother and grandmother, who spent their lives around food and a kitchen, Gallegos began working in a restaurant, and now possesses over 30 years of experience in the industry.

When Superintendent Dr. Joe Gonzales was looking for people to help round out the health and wellness curriculum at East Austin College Prep, Sheldon Williams was an obvious choice. A resident of East Austin, Williams grew up just down the street from EAPrep partner Southwest Key Programs on Jain Lane. Williams wanted to be “the best basketball player in the world” as a kid and, since he was skinny, began working out at an early age. He notes, “Working out didn’t hurt with the girls either.”
