East Austin College Prep has selected 15 students from the 10th grade Advanced Spanish class to participate in an immersion program in Madrid. “I am so excited to see a new place and explore the world. This trip is going to be fantastic!” says 10th grader Athziry L.
Ms. Jacqueline Vidal, history teacher is leading the efforts in organizing the first international trip with EAPrep students. “We believe that the best way to learn a language is to completely become immersed in the native culture and country, surrounding students with the language so they are able to practice the skills they have been learning in the classroom,” explains Ms. Vidal.
Spain was the chosen country because it is the birthplace of the Spanish language. Furthermore, many of the students are descended from Mexican immigrants and all are residents of Texas. The histories of both Texas and Mexico are indelibly linked to Spain and visiting Spain will not only allow them to practice their Spanish but provide a real world connection to the history and culture. “I will bring back to the school community what I’ve learned in Spain. I will bring back new knowledge and experiences,” says 10th grader Laura P.
“This will be a socially and academically enriching opportunity that we believe our students will benefit from greatly,” says Ms. Vidal. The trip to Spain is not cheap and fundraising is taking place at every opportunity. The students have been holding weekly snack sales after school and reaching out to the local community. “This trip means a new opportunity to grow for me. I don’t care how hard we have to work, it will all be worth it,” says Monica H.
EAPrep will be hosting a Holiday Celebration event at the MLK Campus on December 14th from 4-7pm with other EAPrep student organizations and the Spain trip will receive some of those funds. This will be a good opportunity for the students to give back to their community and raise awareness for this great opportunity. “We truly believe that this experience will be a positive and unique one that will carry over with our students for the rest of their lives,” says Ms. Vidal.
“I will be the first [in my family] to travel abroad as well as the first to graduate from college. My family is really excited for me and very supportive in any way they can,” says Angelica G.
