Comments from 2006 Race Participants

Right in front of us, before the second to last turn for the finish line, was a small boy.  He looked to be no older than 6 or 7.  I noticed he was walking by himself.  Wearing the orange race shirt all the kids seemed to be wearing.  He was tired, looked a little sad.  And then suddenly he saw his dad on the "sideline".  Dad was on baby patrol, with stroller, and another young child near by.  The little boy screamed out "DADDY!!!" and began to run towards him, happy as can be.  He ran to dad and gave him a big hug.  It was SO cute!  Dad tells him the finish line is around the corner.  "Go finish, I'm right behind you."  He happily jogged to the finish. That's the kind of success that no one can measure.  Great job! ― Patricia Cuenca, 2006 race participant

Y'all put together a nice course. I liked the elementary student participation, too. It made it feel more community-oriented than other runs I do. Good job! ― Lisa Davis, 2006 race participant

My husband and I started running the Go for the Gold 10k last year and plan on making it a yearly tradition. We enjoy doing things like this together, especially if it is for a good cause. The course is great because you get to see people in the neighborhood supporting what you are doing. ― June Thompson, 2006 race participant I thoroughly enjoyed the event and cruising through East Austin!  The event feels like a family event, great runner food too!  I was super impressed with the turnout of kids from KIPP Academy!!!  I visited with a couple of the staff and they are equally impressive. I'll be back next year! ― Joe Huerta, 2006 race participant

The race was great! Awesome setup, good location, decent route (the hill in the first mile killed)…I thought the elementary school kids were great! Will do it again next year! ― Leila K., 2006 race participant

I really enjoyed the race.  I wish I'd run faster, but that doesn't change the fact that it was a very well organized and executed event.  Parking was easy, the layout of the start/finish was quite convenient, and the volunteers were plentiful, friendly, and knew what they were doing.  Everything seemed to go very smoothly… I thought the course was good.  It had a nice mix of hills and flat sections, good road surfaces (no potholes or excess road crowning), a nice mix of neighborhoods, and no problems with traffic or obstructions. ― Chris Runhaar, 2006 race participant

I loved the run and enjoyed the festival like atmosphere at the start and finish. Great food. Loved the friendliness of the volunteers and coordinators. ― Ruth Sepulveda, 2006 race participant

The 10K race was a great, uplifting atmosphere with all the kids, neighborhood support, and mariachi bands playing.  I would definiely run this race again because it introduced me to a part of Austin I might not have ever visited.  Great job! ― Leslie Keyser, 2006 race participant

I really enjoy this race. The finishing/starting area is perfect. The mariachi band really made for a good atmosphere -- along with so many friendly volunteers, great breakfast tacos, oranges, bananas, & good ceremony afterwards. The course is interesting (if you have energy to look), and there were some friendly neighbors to wave us on. I like that it's a loop course -- the time one achieves seems more honest than in a downhill race. ― Bev Wills, 2006 race participant

My wife and I had a great experience! The course was good and challenging course - not too easy, not too hard. The plaza is a neat place for pre and post race activities, and the food and events after the race were nice (especially the breakfast tacos and donuts!). The mariachi band was a nice touch… Thanks for your efforts! ― Nick and Kathleen Walker, 2006 race participants

This was a fun party atmosphere with some challenging hills on the 10k. Thanks for the tasty breakfast tacos, and yummy doughnuts. It was very nice to see the kids participating in this event. The mariachi band was the perfect touch! This was my first time doing this race but I'll be sure to keep it on my calendar in the future. ― Renee Reynolds, 2006 race participant

Really great race you all put on. I loved the course, loved seeing parts of East Austin I'd never seen. The mariachi band was great, and there was a really great amount and variety of food. But what I loved the most was how many kids you were able to get involved, and how many of them I saw running in new shoes. It made the race feel much more like an event centered around the East Austin Community itself. It's also really nice to see some more runs out there in town that have a worthy cause…Most important of all, I would like to see just as many youngsters out there on race day enjoying the event, more if possible. Thanks for the best race I've ever run in Austin.― Eddie McKenna, 2006 race participant

I had a great time! My favorite part was running alongside all of the kids. This was my first race and they were a good distraction from the humidity. Their eager expressions and pleasantness in running were a joy!! The course was a good choice with a balanced amount of moderate elevations and straight-aways. The entire event was very well organized and the start time was good. I hope to participate again next year. Thank you for all of your efforts! ― Danielle Bragaw, 2006 race participant

I enjoyed the race! It was really fun seeing and running with the young kids. Don't change a thing. I'll be back next year. ― Russell Hahn, 2006 race participant

I liked running through East Austin. It's always fun to have new scenery to look at. I loved the kids running- maybe they will be encouraged to keep it up! The food at the end was great- appreciated those breakfast tacos and oranges! ― Barb Edwards, 2006 race participant

I have really enjoyed this year's race again. Love the area & race route in East Austin…I loved the food. Best tacos I have ever had at any race. Fantastic volunteers! Overall good! ― Monka Sunholz, 2006 race participant

I enjoyed the race very much. Thank you for putting on such a great race in a part of town that often gets over looked in the running community. The atmosphere was amazing at the finish line; having the kids cheering on the last part of the course was nice and helped the final push. The mariachi band was cool. I think the food at the finish was about the best I've had a race. The course was perfect. When all was said and done, I had a PR and good food at the end, so I give the race an A. ― Tim Hudgeons, 2006 race participant

I enjoyed the race, and thought that the cause was very worthwhile. The people were very supportive, and all were gracious hosts.  It was a pleasure to be part of the event.  I hope it continues to grow in popularity and benefits this very important charity. ― Linda Lang, 2006 race participant
