Dr. Frank Felix has served on Southwest Key’s Board of Directors since 1992. He is a native Tucsonan, a mariachi musician, and member of the Yaqui tribe. In college, he majored in political science, but worked as a cameraman at the university's PBS affiliate, KUAT-TV. The gig would change his life when he met legendary Arizona Congressman Mo Udall on a shoot. Mo took a shine to Frank and a few months later, invited him to come work on his staff. Frank remembers Udall teaching him to have respect for process and procedures and to listen to divergent views and work toward consensus.
After a year in D.C., Frank returned to Arizona. He was the youngest person elected to the state Senate when he won his seat in 1972. During his three terms, Frank counts among his proudest accomplishments the passage of laws that forced public officials to meet in the open and for state lawmakers to disclose gifts from lobbyists. While serving in the Legislature until 1979, Felix continued attending the University of Arizona, earning a master's in political science and a Ph.D. in education administration.
After leaving the Capitol, he worked in various administrative posts at the University, i ncluding Director of Development for the Colleges of Architecture, Education, Law and the Udall Center for the Studies in Public Policy from 1986 to 1991 and Director of Scholarship Development from 1991 to 1998. During these years, Frank was responsible for managing and creating over 170 million dollars in donations. His ability to perceive and communicate with individual donors, corporations, foundations, and governmental agencies makes him an important part of Southwest Key’s Board of Directors.
Frank is currently a senior consultant with The Irvington Group. He has provided specialized consultation in the area of financial systems and planning, organizational change, performance improvement, strategic planning, and executive professional development to a large portfolio of clients, including Imago Dei Middle School, St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Diocese of Tucson School District, the Arizona State Savings and Credit Union. He served as acting Executive Director for the Prime School of Music from 2000 to 2002 and Executive Director of the Foundation for Integrative Medicine from January of 1999 to September of 2000. Dr. Felix also served as Independent Council for the San Francisco Public School System and continues to work with at-risk youth in identifying self-worth and meaning in their heritage.
